This milestone marks a significant step for the global medical cannabis market. Morocco, long known for its high-quality cannabis products, is now transforming from an informal market into a regulated, internationally recognized industry.
A Long Road Toward Regulation
In cooperation with the Swiss Embassy in Morocco, Medropharm began analyzing the market more than two years ago and established strategic partnerships with local producers. The result: as the first company in the world, Medropharm and its Moroccan partner now produce hashish for medical purposes – a first for the pharmaceutical industry and an important step toward the global regulation of cannabis.
Dr. Claudia Zieres-Nauth, CEO of Medropharm AG, highlights the significance of this achievement:
“Morocco has deep cultural roots with the cannabis plant. The transition from an unregulated market to a pharmaceutically controlled industry is a major step forward – economically and socially. With our medical hashish, we are setting a new standard for the pharmaceutical cannabis industry.”
From Centuries of Tradition to a Pharmaceutical Product
For decades, Morocco has been a center of cannabis culture – musicians, artists, and travelers from around the world, including The Beatles, contributed to the international reputation of Moroccan hashish. However, production was largely shaped by illegal structures. Now, the country is leveraging its vast cultivation expertise to build a sustainable, regulated, and economically viable cannabis industry.
Patrick Widmer, founder and co-owner of Medropharm AG, emphasizes the importance of this transformation:
“More than 25 years ago, after a journey through Morocco, I had the vision to transform this Moroccan cultural heritage into a medical product and bring it to Europe. The fact that we are realizing the first export today proves that a regulated market is possible – with all its positive effects for producers, patients, and the global cannabis sector.”
Future Outlook: A Signal to the International Pharmaceutical Industry
Medical hashish opens new possibilities for therapeutic applications and expands the existing range of cannabis flowers and extracts. This is particularly relevant for liberalized markets with a growing demand for pharmaceutical-grade diversity. Cultural familiarity also plays a role – for many, medical hashish, the resin of the cannabis plant, is more recognizable than dried cannabis flowers, as it has historically also been used orally.
This first legal export could serve as a model for other countries with traditional cannabis cultures seeking to open up to regulated legalization and pharmaceutical production. With this development, Morocco positions itself as an emerging player in the international cannabis market.

The development has also been widely covered in the Moroccan media. Morocco World News reports on the significant economic potential of these new medical cannabis exports.
